DIY Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide

Kids should also be fully protected as they play outside. A waterproof sunscreen is highly recommended for kids who often enjoy water play outside at school and at home. There are several types of sunscreens out there but unfortunately, some are laden with various chemicals that we cannot pronounce leading many healthy skin care proponent to opt for mineral sunscreens for chemical free protection.

Zinc oxide powder has been used for several years in making a ton of skin care products ranging from diaper rash cream to lip balms. The protecting qualities of zinc can be seen in several applications. It is used in the treatment of acne of all types, foot problems, diaper rash and more. Each percent of zinc oxide gives 1.6 SPF units so at the FDA approved concentration of zinc oxide which is 25 percent. You will end up with an SPF of 40 which is an excellent level of protection. It is important to mention that zinc oxide has been extensively tested by the FDA over the years and found to be very safe for use in beauty products.

In this video, we show you how to make your own sunscreen at home using zinc oxide and shea butter. Based on FDA recommendations, we are using a concentration of 25% of zinc oxide in this recipe and that provides a sun protection factor of up to 40. Using shea butter which has a natural SPF value of 4 boosts the overall protection to 44 which is not bad for a simple homemade product.
